How Well Do You Know Nigeria’s Diagnostic Journey?

Did you know that Medical Diagnostic Science originated during the era of colonial rule in Nigeria and this greatly influenced the subsequent development of diagnostic services in the country? Indeed, the roots of diagnostic services in Nigeria can be traced back to the colonial era, when Medical Laboratory Services were established.

During that time, the colonial powers introduced modern diagnostics and healthcare systems, and it was in this context that the General Hospital in Lagos took a momentous stride by establishing the first Pathology Laboratory in Nigeria in 1912. The primary objective of the establishment was to recruit Secondary School Certificate Leavers for training with the explicit aim of ensuring precise diagnoses and appropriate treatment for patients. Consequently, this laboratory played a pivotal role in the advancement of healthcare by offering dependable and precise laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases.

The pioneering efforts in the field were instrumental in shaping the subsequent development of medical diagnostics services in Nigeria. The establishment of training institutions, such as schools and colleges, provided a platform for educating and training individuals in the specialized field of Medical Diagnostic Science. Between 2005 and 2012, diagnostic capacity was established at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) was established in 2016 as the national public health institute to enhance technical diagnostic capacities. A key focus has been on strengthening laboratory diagnostics and establishing networks for diseases like viral hemorrhagic fevers, meningitis, cholera, measles, yellow fever, and COVID-19, which have had a significant impact on medical laboratory science in Nigeria, with the NCDC operating round the clock to manage both the global COVID-19 pandemic and the largest Lassa fever outbreak in Nigeria. Currently, the National Public Health Reference Laboratory at the NCDC can test and diagnose these diseases. The pandemic has also generated increased interest in biotech in Nigeria. The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) in Lagos is actively participating in health research and has improved virus detection capabilities through collaboration with the Institute of Pasteur Senegal, enhancing preparedness for the pandemic.
